Controls

From StoneKeep Wiki
A visual guide to the sidebar.

So you've just started on Stonekeep, and you have no idea what all these fancy UI elements are. Fear not, for this guide will lead you through the worst of it. Before you join your first round, you should definitely look in the Keybind menu in Character Creation.

Keybinds

You can find this Keybind menu on the Character Creation menu in the top right. You can't open this when you are in game.

It's recommended to rebind a few of these; for "classic" SS13 controls, unbind Swap to Left and Swap to Right and bind X to Swap Hands.

Bind Cancel/Resist to something else, like B. It is important for your ability to fight against wrestling or being grabbed. Otherwise, traditional SS13 controls remain mostly the same.

  • R - Throw mode:

Allows you to catch with an empty hand and throw held items. Useful with rocks and knives.

  • 1, 2, 3, 4 - Cycle intents:

These allow you to change between the four (empty-hand) intents: touch, shove, grab, and punch. These intents will change depending on what is in your hand, and each intent has its own uses.

For example, a hunting knife has cut, stab, and chop.

  • Cut will swing the blade at whatever you click on. Can be used to sharpen sticks, cut grass, and a few other things.
  • Stab is more precise and has a chance of getting stuck in the target at which point the intents change from Take and Twist where you can either pull the blade out or twist the blade in deeper, good for eyes on the aiming intent.
  • Chop takes more stamina but does more damage and has a higher chance of dismembering. It's also more effective at chopping trees and logs. To cut raw meat and make mince, you must double-click on the meat with chop intent.

Another example is a bow. They have three intents; shoot, arc, and strike.

  • To shoot, mouse over what you would like to shoot, and click and hold while a little buffering symbol appears next to your cursor. When the Psydon rune appears at your cursor, you have an accuracy bonus, but your stamina (green bar) will begin to drain.
  • To arc a shot, you shoot through Z-levels (the vertical levels of the map).
  • If you strike someone, you'll just hit them with a bow. Not very effective.

Practice, and use common sense to determine intents of other items.

  • H, J, K, L - Middle Mouse Button Intents:

These hotkeys are bound to what I will further call special actions. These are what you will be doing when you middle-mouse/M3 click on something. If you don't have a middle-mouse button, or (God forbid) you're on a trackpad, bind it to something else. This is essential.

  • Bite is bound to H by default. This action has a few uses, but you will primarily be using this special action to drink water by middle clicking on water tiles. The combat use, or Vampire use, for this is clicking on someone and whichever part you have targeted you will bite down on. This puts their flesh in your mouth inventory slot, which is where you will get the options to either CHEW or DRINK. Chewing does damage, and drinking drinks blood or whatever fluid they are covered in. You cannot drink their blood unless there is a bleeding wound.
  • Jump is bound to J. Jump is a useful mobility and combat tool - you can jump by clicking anywhere in a 2-tile range, 1-tile diagonal, and you can jump farther if you get a running start. Combat uses depend on your mass. If you are stronger than the person you are jumping into, you will tackle them to the ground.
  • K is for Kick. Middle-clicking on something while this intent is highlighted will have you kick something. You can kick open and close doors instantly, you can knock someone off balance or while they're downed, kick rocks along the road, move a item away from you, and kick a dead saiga.
  • L for Steal. While self explanatory, it is complex in execution; you have to target someone's body part depending on what you want to steal from them, and middle-click them. The easiest inventory slots to steal from are the neck and pockets; to take from these, you target the neck and groin. Your pick-pocketing skill will help you greatly in your chances.
  • F - Fixed eye:

This is your LOOK IN THIS DIRECTION button. When you click it, you will look only in that direction while moving until you click another direction. This is very useful with the limited field of view more hoods and helmets give you. Right click and drag with an empty hand to do spins.

  • Q, E - Hand controls:

These two buttons are going to be your best friends if you stick to the default control scheme instead of swapping to classic controls. Q is used for your left hand and E is for your right. One press will swap to that hand and a second will activate whatever is in that hand. Pretty useful to be able to do this on the fly.

  • UNBOUND - Swap hands:

This is your basic TG swap hands button. Press it and you will swap to your other hand.

  • UNBOUND - Activate in hand:

Another classic SS13 control along with swap hands. Press it and you will activate whatever you have in your selected hand.

  • Z - Drop item:

Press this button to drop whatever you are holding in the selected hand.

  • UNBOUND - Sprint:

Press this to activate sprint. Press and hold to keep sprinting around corners. Not recommended to do for long as you will run out of breath fast and can crash into, fall off, or run into traps very easily.

  • UNBOUND - Sneak:

If you are in the wild, turn on Sneak. This mode will make you slower, but it will also mean you won't have random encounters in the wild, which can very easily kill you.

To sneak around other player characters, you need to have a good sneak skill, outroll their Perception stat, and be in darkness. This means extinguishing all of your lampterns or torches, or creeping around at night.

  • Shift Y - Yield:

THIS IS YOUR I SURRENDER BUTTON. USE IT OR THEY WILL KILL YOU. When you press this button you will immediately drop to the ground and a little white flag will pop over your head. You will be unable to do anything for a time after pressing it. Or, you could just drop to the down and say "I surrender!" Your attackers can take it on face value, or they can kill you. It's a roleplay server, after all.

  • Ctrl + W, Ctrl + D, Ctrl + S, Ctrl + A:

These button combos are how you look in a direction without moving. Useful for when you are using your mouse hand for something else and need to look around but not much else. You can also Shift + right click in a direction to look in that direction.

  • Z - Stop pulling:

Similar to your drop button, this will drop anyone you are dragging/carrying.

  • Numpad 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 - Targeting buttons :

If you don't have a number pad on your keyboard, this will sadly be unusable since you simply do not have a number pad. If you do, however, enable Num Lock on your keyboard to use this function. These buttons will shift your targeting body-part, as indicated on the doll to the left of your screen.

8 will target the head; press it multiple times to cycle through head, eyes, and mouth. You can stab eyes, cover their mouth with grab intent, or yank their ear. 5 targets the chest, 6 and 3 target the left limbs, 4 and 1 target the right limbs, 2 targets the groin.

  • W, A, S, D - Movement keys:

Do we really need to explain? W moves you north. A moves you west. S moves you south. D moves you east.

UI Elements

  1. Health Doll/Targeting UI: You can see what limbs of yours are damaged on this doll, and where you are targeting to interact with others. The redder an area gets, the more damage it has taken and thus the more likely it is to be disabled. Right clicking any particular part will tell you in general what is hurt and how.
  2. Your Health Heart: Your general health indication. If the pink starts draining, then something is hurting you and clicking on it will tell you why this is happening. Right clicking will open a list of all the people you know; this is not a list of everyone, just the people you "know". Useful and required for using scrying orbs.
  3. Crafting: This is your CRAFT button. Click it and it will open a menu for all things you can craft based on the items on the ground around you. It does not count items in bags, carts, backpacks, pouches, satchels or any other inventory. Right-click the CRAFT button to craft the last thing you made again.
  4. Skills: This is your SKILLS menu. Click it and your skills will pop up in your chat. These control everything from your ability to sew, your proficiency with weapons, and even your ability to read. Each skill levels between Weak and Legendary, and increases your speed and random chance to do that thing - sort of like a tabletop game where you roll dice. To boost a skill, you have to perform an action related to that skill successfully. Right-clicking SKILLS will have your traits pop up in chat. These are bonuses or maluses based on your class; things like training you have as a guard, and similar.
  5. Mood: This is your current mood, which can debuff you if it gets low enough. You can also check on your "flaw" here. Click it to see what your character is in need of. You can have buffs if you are in a good mood, or ate good food, booze, or are blessed.
  6. Your Eye: There are three main actions with the eye.
    1. Click the eye and it will lock your rotation to the direction you are facing while moving.
    2. Right click the eye and stand still and your character will look around for dangers. DO THIS IN WILD OFTEN. Players, mantraps, monsters, and everything in between can all surprise you. This is a check of your perception versus the opponent's sneak skill.
    3. The top and bottom shutters/arrows around the eye can be clicked to close your eyes. You do this to avoid being blinded, to sleep when you lay on a bed, and when you don't want the dungeoneer to pluck out your eyeballs.
  7. Up arrow: This is your stand up button. Press it when you want to stand up.
  8. RUN: Press this button to sprint. This drains your stamina and will stop if you turn. You can also use this along with the jump command to leap long distances.
  9. Down arrow : Use this to lay down. Very useful.
  10. SNEAK: Turn this on to toggle sneak intent; see above for more information.
  11. Parry/Dodge Button: Very important to your combat strategy. It is set to dodge by default; when combat mode is activated you will dodge attacks automatically based on your skills and stats. Parrying is similar in that it is automatically done once entering combat mode, but it's purely based on your weapon skill versus your opponent's.
  12. Fatigue and Stamina: Important to your survival. The blue bar on the left is your fatigue/mana bar. The lower it gets, the less max stamina you have. You can get it back by sleeping, or lying on a comfortable bed for a bit. The green bar is your stamina bar. It is used to do just about any action and regens when you don't do anything for some time. IF you run out of stamina you are paralyzed and can't do anything while you catch your breath.
  13. Combat Stances: Essentially your fighting style. Your choices here effect your actions in combat and out.
    1. Feint stance lets you right click attack and knock the opponent off balance if they are parrying.
    2. Weak is your training/torture stance; you can't crit. Weak stance is also essential for surgery.
    3. Defend increases your ability to dodge or parry and removes the time delay between defenses.
    4. Swift shortens your action delay in and out of combat letting you do things faster.
    5. Strong increase your strength by 1 for actions while using more stamina.
    6. Aimed increases your accuracy and lets you hit specific parts easier.
  14. Intents: See Keybinds for more information.
  15. COMBAT: Press this or you will die in combat. When it is off you will not defend yourself at all, no matter if you are dodging or parrying. Combat mode needs to be on to parry or dodge.
  16. Special Actions: This is your buttons for Bite, Jump, Kick, and Steal. See Keybinds.
  17. Hands : These are your hands, with left on the left and right on the right. You select your dominant hand in Character Creation. These are how your interact with the world. Left and right clicks have many uses which you can find by experimenting. To hand someone or take something being given, right-click on other people with an empty hand/hand with the offered item.
  18. Catch/Toss: Your Catch and Throw button. Click it with an open hand to catch flying objects and throw whatever you are holding. They don't work on arrows.
  19. Drop: Drops whatever you are holding or carrying.
  20. Mask slot: Holds masks, eye wear, and other face coverings.
  21. Hat Slot: You wear hats, hoods, coifs and other head based clothing on this slot.
  22. Mouth slot: You can put things in your mouth here. Pipes, cloth gags, bandanas and such. You can also hold small items in your mouth for a short time like a pirate does, but you can't speak when it's in your mouth. Useful when you need to hold a key somewhere to open a door or hold onto a knife while sliding down a sail canvas.
  23. Back slot 1: Your first back slot. Holds satchels, big weapons, and other things. You can't put backpacks here.
  24. Cloak slot: Put your cloak, cape, robes, or tabard here. Useful for staying dry and color-coordinating with your allies. Right-click your cloak to raise the hood as long as your hat slot is empty.
  25. Back slot 2: The same as slot 1, but you can put backpacks here.
  26. Neck slot: Holds necklaces, pouches, coifs and gorgets. The last two are very important to keeping your head on your shoulders.
  27. Armor slot: Holds armor. Whether plate, leather hide, or chain, you can wear it over your shirt and under your cloak.
  28. Wrist slot: Holds bracers, chains, ropes, and sometimes amulets.
  29. Ring slot Holds rings, naturally.
  30. Shirt slot: Holds shirts, goes under your armor. You can layer clothing for a fashionable look.
  31. Glove slot: Holds gloves.
  32. Left hip slot: Your left hip slot. Only usable if you have a belt equipped. You can hang some small items here, kind of like pockets.
  33. Belt slot: Holds belts or sashes.
  34. Right hip slot: Ditto the left slot, but on the right.
  35. Pants slot: Holds pants and tights so you can cover your shame; goes over your underwear.
  36. Shoes slot: Holds shoes, boots, or cloth wrappings. Useful for not ripping your feet apart or stepping on swords, or tripping.

Intents

  • Use: A common intent. Interacting with a held item or something else while on the Use intent will activate the item in hand.
  • Touch: Touch is a basic action you take with your hands that is use to pick items up, use them on others or yourself, pull levers, open doors or chests, close them to. Touch is for basic interactions, and if you don't know what something does, well... touch it! Or don't.
  • Shove: Pushing or attempting to knock down and or disarm someone. You won't find yourself using it much, even in combat, but if you lack a weapon and they have one you can try to turn the tables by shoving your opponent and stealing their weapon.
  • Grab: Grabbing an item or living being. You can target different places to perform actions like restraining a limb or covering a mouth. To get a stronger grip on someone, click them again with Grab intent with the same hand highlighted; you can even wrench or break body parts. For a fun time, grab someone's groin and twist.
  • Strike: A blunt strike with hand or weapon. If using your bare hands, you should have some good hand-to-hand combat skills, but don't expect to do much against anyone with armor. With a weapon, you are the bane of most armor users, as bludgeoning damage can usually penetrate armor depending on what type it is. The head is almost a good spot to aim; if you get a good hit on a bare head you can instantly knock someone out.
  • Smash: A blunt attack made to destroy and bypass armor, available with larger blunt weapons.
  • Cut: A simple slash attack used by edged weapons. Causes bleeding wounds and can sometimes remove limbs. Mostly ineffective against armor.
  • Chop: A heavy attack used by more weighted edged weapons, such as axes or cleavers. Good at dealing with some armor types, as well as cutting down trees. Don't try to use it against faster opponents in combat, as it is slower to hit.
  • Stab: A quick stab attack with a pointed weapon. Very good at dealing with armor and damaging small targets like the eyes. It can cause bleeding stab wounds that need a needle to stop the bleeding, as opposed to the light wounds caused by cutting.
  • Pick: A hard-swung jab. Similar to stab, but for breaking through tough stumps and stone.
  • Feed : Self-explanatory. Using it on yourself or someone else feeds that person whatever food or fluid you have in hand. Also used to transfer the contents of one container to another, like buckets to barrels.
  • Fill: Used to fill fluid containers like cups, buckets, and bottles, from barrels or bins.
  • Splash: Used to splash the contents of fluid containers on a tile or target. Best used on burning allies, or with sewage on the nobility.
