The town of Rockhill needs MEAT, and you’re the only one who can provide it. Well, unless the Merchant decides to order a crateful, anyway.
But, if the Merchant is too lazy to order any licenses or just doesn’t exist, it’s time for you to get to work on catching game! This guide will teach you how to do so, hopefully without dying.
Equipment
In general, you should probably have a few bags crafted and lying around, to fill with your catches. Meat will spoil after a relatively short time, but whole fish take longer to spoil.
Hunting
If you’re a Ranger or a Hunter, you spawn with a bow and a quiverful of arrows. You can likely ask for more arrows from the Garrison, a carpenter, or even a blacksmith, if you’re so inclined.
A hunter will also need bait. There are three kinds; grain bait, sweet bait, and blood bait. Respectively, these can be crafted with two grains, two berries, or two meat. They will attract different kinds of animals, so watch out. Craft bait with your two food items, a bag, while facing a table.
Using a bow
- Put your bow in preferably your dominant hand, which is selected in your character setup screen.
- Click on your quiver with your bow in hand to nock an arrow.
- Swap to
Shoot
intent if you're on the same level as your target.
- Left-click and hold on your target. The sound of drawing your string back will play, and an indicator will appear next to your cursor.
- When the indicator becomes a psydonic cross, your shot is fully-charged. Release your held click to send the arrow flying!
If you want to crawl up a tree and shoot something from there, choose
Arc
intent, and right-click the arrow pointing down on your UI. This will make you look down around where your target is. From there, you can click and hold on your target to fire an arced arrow at them.
Fishing
If you are a Fisher, you will either spawn with a fishing rod or can craft one if you lose it somehow. They can be crafted with two fibres and one small log.
You will also need a shovel or spade to dig up a critter, such as a worm, leech, or grub. Critters can be found by digging on mud tiles, next to water. Alternatively, you can use an apple core or some cheese as bait.
How to Fish
- Find some water to stand next to.
- Take your fishing rod and put your critter on the rod by clicking on it.
- Click on a water tile with your fishing rod.
- Wait for the progress line to complete.
- If a chat notification shows up that you have a bite, immediately move your character!
- If you didn't even get a nibble, try casting again.
How to Hunt
- Head out to the outskirts of town or in the wild. Make sure to toggle
Sneak
mode when you’re out wandering. - Click the bait in your hand to start setting it up.
- Move at least a full screen’s distance away from your bait, and hide out. You can Shift + right click to look at your bait from a distance away.
- When an animal spawns on your bait, go over to it and shoot it in the face until it dies.
- You could also stab it in the face until it dies, but this is dangerous. Saigas are liable to stomp you into paste, and even gotes can get the occasional lucky crit and break all your ribs. Volves are also very dangerous and can tear your limbs off if they get the drop on you.
- When the animal is dead, walk up to it and middle-mouse click on it with a knife in hand to butcher it. You can then pick up the meat, fat, hide, and fur with a sack.
- Keep in mind that meat will spoil within an in-game day. Fat takes much longer to spoil.
There will also be animals that spawn in the wild without you baiting them or being ambushed by them, which will be helpful if you run out of bait.
