Alchemy may still require bugs to be ironed out. Use the bug tracker on the Stonekeep GitHub to report bugs and inconsistencies.

If you’re a feldsher, archivist, or court magician, you have talent in the alchemical arts and are privy to most of their secrets. With this knowledge, you can craft potions that heal the body, boost its capabilities, and brew more sinister concoctions…

Equipment

For potion-making, you will need:

  • A cauldron, for brewing
  • A mortar and pestle, for grinding ingredients

You can craft a cauldron with 2 iron bars, 4 stones, and 1 small log. A mortar and pestle can respectively be crafted with 3 and 2 stones, and you will require a knife (a stone knife is fine) to create them.

To make a potion, you need at least 20 oz of water inside the cauldron. Then, add your ingredients to the cauldron. The cauldron will take some time to brew the potion; you'll know when the potion is done brewing when a sound effect plays, the contents change color, and a message indicates the brew gives off a certain smell.

Sourcing Your Ingredients

You almost certainly don’t have the skills or time to source all your ingredients independently. You’ll need to ask hunters, fishers, foragers, and miners to get you what you need. Some of the more common ingredients are:

  • Leeches. Can easily be found in muck, or by wading into swampwater (ewww). The feldsher also usually has leeches in their basement.
  • Ash. Toss a thorn or string through a brazier.
  • Sinew and bone. Can be sourced from animals. Ground sinew makes viscera.
  • Fish. Go fishing.
  • Tobacco dust. Grind westleach leaf up.
  • Metal dust, gold, silver, iron, and coal. Grind up raw ore or ingots (though the blacksmith will likely be upset if you grind up an ingot).

On the other hand, making potions to increase character statistics requires rune dusts, magical dusts that can be sourced from rare creachers in the world. The following are hints; you should carefully examine the world around you to best put these hints to use.

  • Air rune dust must be sourced from the wings of a sacred bird.
  • Earth rune dust must be sourced from the horn of a child of Dendor.
  • Fire rune dust must be sourced from a fiery plant.
  • Water rune dust must be sourced from certain rarified fish.

You can also acquire these dusts by grinding up runes, which look like colourful books. These can be found hidden in dangerous dungeons, but runes serve a second, very useful purpose to those trained in the arcane; it’s up to you to decide what to do with them.
